Litva and Jemajtia in XVII century |
|
Litva - name of union of tribes, after historical-geographical and ethnographic area on northwest of modern Republic of Belarus and southeast of the Lithuanian Republic. For the first time is mentioned in Kvedlinburg's annals from 1009, in east-slavic annals - from 1040. The Ethymology finally is not clarified. In the late Byelorussian-Lithuanian annals its mythical -legendary explanation is given: from latin words " litus tuba" ("litus " - coast, "tuba" - tube), which ostensibly inhabitants of Rome named earth near Neman, which were moved, according to a legend, here from Italy. The modern researchers link the name "Lithuania" to the Baltic or Slavic sources Lieta, Lieti (to pour, to leak), to the name of the river Lietovka or Lietava (inflow of Vilia) etc.
Jemajtia - historical-geographical and ethnographic area, which occupies a northwest part of modern Lithuanian Republic. The ethymology occurs from the name of tribe Jemajty (Jmudz) - ethnic grandparents of the modern Lithuanians, living to north and east from lower current of Neman. In XIII-XIV centuries was the object of territorial disputes between Great Princedom Lithuanian and Tevton's order. After the fight near Grunvald (1410) it is finally attached to GEL.

Dubava-2006 |
|
The photos from Jaroslaw Matusieiwicz of cemetery in Dubava: before and after cleaning.
Cemetery in Dubava, is laying around 2 km from village of Tsiskowszczyna, right on 1939 former border between Poland and USSR, approximately 800m from main road. It is very difficult to determine numbers of graves as some back to middle of 1800 are completely destroyed and some are new, erected in last few years. Jaroslaw Matusiewicz speaks: "In our "cleaning operation" approximately half of cemetery was clean from bushes, rotten trees and high grass. We discovered nine Matusewicz graves and several other local families: Sobolewski, Hurski, Borowski, Hrolowicz, Januszkiewicz, Kaczanowicz, Pozniak, Anisowicz.
According to local people from Tsiskowszczyna and Barzdi, Matusewicz families were buried in Dubava and Volma cemetery, which we also visited and discovered two graves.
We would like to come next year in August to Dubava and finish job: clean rest of cemetery, put around some fence and record names from stones. Anyone Matusewicz or not is welcome, for more info please contact Jaro Matusiewicz in UK jaromat@hotmail.com".
